30 for 30: Days 1-5

OK so I started thinking about how to close out the 30 for 30 project and unfortunately a print show was out of the budget I had to create this. so I’m posting the stories on the blog. I was going to try to do this every day but I figured a few days at a time would be good. I’ve made people wait long enough to see these photographs and be able to finally talk about the fun filled month and the challenges and what I learned.Read More

Recently we got 3 days of snow here in Charlotte. Which is an extreme rarity. We usually only get one or two inches typically it’s barely enough for a snowball fight and a snowman. For three days straight snow fell, and before we knew it we had enough to go sledding on hills and really enjoying the fun snow can bring. At first Ariana did not like the snow at all, but after day 2 she was jumping around in it just like all the other kids. It was all the kids could stand so when they went inside to warm up the grown ups had a little fun of their own.  we started off with just using boogie boards on a hill. but my neighbor had a snowboard and It had been years since I first tried to snowboard a long time ago. It wasn’t pretty then, but it sure was a whole lot more fun now. I found out I still know how to bite it pretty well. But all in all we had one of the best winters we’ve had together. Thankfully, we ARE in “the south” so it only lasted for 3 days.

Heres one of me not biting it as bad.

Actually, I’m still pretty terrible at it. Until next time Old Man Winter!

Elevation Church: Raised to Life Baptisms

I spend a lot of my free weekends serving at Elevation Church as a photographer. It’s one of the coolest things I get to do outside of being with my family. It’s pretty cool being able to see peoples lives changing before my eyes. I sometimes wonder if people even notice the changes I see over time. Even simple things like haircuts, but also sometimes I see them go from filled with tension to filled with joy and it makes me happy for them. However, in late August / Early September of 2013 I got to see it happen over 450 times in the course of a few hours. People let go of resentments, worries, anger and pick up a sense of hope, and happiness. As I photographed these people get baptized, I couldn’t help but replay my own memories of being baptized and then turning around and seeing my wife get baptized right after me. Similarly to how I pretty much renew my wedding vows every time I shoot a ceremony. So, I thank those people who stood up and decided to change their lives that day. Believe it or not, your actions made an impact on me too, and for many of them it’s the moment that changed how I saw them, I heard their name, I learned something about who they are and they instantly were transformed from another face in a crowd to an individual person who I shared an important, life changing moment with.

Bridal Portraits: Whitney

I love Bridal Portraits! Today I get to show off the lovely bride Whitney and her gorgeous gown. She’s such a lovely bride. She’s so naturally beautiful she made rocking that gown look easy.  I love that the gown has an asymmetrically cut, textured, fit and flare skirt and a lace up corset back.  She’s getting married at the fabulous Orchard House in Concord, NC. This wedding is going to be beautiful, and everyone there will agree, she’s going to look marvelous in it

Family Portraits: Gittner 50th Anniverary

When I get to photograph Weddings I have the privilege to document the beginning of two lives coming together. However today I get to share photos from a day where I have been given the deep honor to celebrate one love being lived for 50 years, and going strong. Bill and Gretchen gave me the honor of celebrating their 50th anniversary with their family and taking family portraits while I was there. These two set the bar of the couple I strive to be daily, 5 decades later and still hold hands when they sit next to each other, smile at each other and pour out love with simple small gestures that most take for granted. It was really inspiring to be part of their story.  Bill & Gretchen along with their beautiful family got together at the Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC to celebrate, have a lovely dinner, and share an evening of memories. They are such a great Godly family, Bill served most of his life as a pastor, and his leadership and example shine throughout his family. It was so fun photographing all 3 generations of this lovely family.

Just Married: Chris and Layton

The day Chris and Layton were married was a gorgeous day on the lake, and they couldn’t have picked a more beautiful venue to have their wedding than Travis Pointe at Lake Norman.  The venue sits on a peninsula surrounding by water.  Perfect for a lakeside ceremony!

Chris and Layton picked to do an intimate “first look” prior to the wedding.  Layton, a beautiful red head came behind Chris and hugged him.  As Chris turned around, he had a big smile came across his face as he saw his bride for the first time.  These interactions made for a sweet “first look”.

The wedding ceremony was just as sweet with intimate moments and songs from family member and the first communion between Chris and Layton.  As for the reception, it had by far the best wedding food I have ever tasted.  The salmon wellington was out of this world!  I’ve never had salmon that amazing since.  I could really go on for days about this salmon wellington and I often thought that I should visit the caterer again, just to order some for myself!

The dance floor was filled for the whole event.  People were dancing, eating and being merry.  It was a glorious occasion.  And while family and friends were partying on the dance floor, we had time to sneak away with the bride and groom for some nice romantic photos.  While it was still daylight, the sky was big and blue and made for perfect lakeside photos with the bride and groom.  But once the sun went down, we were also able to capture some wonderful night shots that the couple loved.  These made for perfect shots to end the night.  We loved working with Chris and Layton.  They are very down to earth and caring people that we hope to enjoy more with in the future.  We wish them all the happiness with their marriage and their future!
